Sons rise to First Division

Dumbarton have won promotion to the Scottish First Division after a 4-1 second-leg victory over Airdrie secured a 6-2 aggregate triumph in the play-off final.

Coming into the game with a 2-0 first-leg lead, it did not take the Sons long to put the tie beyond their opponents as Craig Dargo coolly converted Scott Agnew's pass in just the ninth minute.

The same combination extended their lead further after 21 minutes as Dargo grabbed his second of the afternoon with another accomplished finish from Agnew's set-up.

Airdrie gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Derek Holmes forced home William McLaren's cross just after the half-hour mark, but it was to be short-lived as Mark Gilhaney latched onto Anthony Wallace's pass to restore Dumbarton's three-goal aggregate lead in first-half injury time.

Wallace then put the visitors further ahead when he converted Bryan Prunty's pass midway through the second half and the hosts' afternoon got even worse when Jamie Bain saw red for a reckless challenge on James Creaney.
